About Safety

Teaching Your Children about Safety

Kids are often very curious and sometimes aren’t very aware that there are numerous dangers surrounding us every day. It’s important that we get our kids to be conscious of dangers to help keep them safe. Listed below are steps to ensure that your children are conscientious about their own safety in and around your home.

1. Teach your children how to make emergency calls in case of a serious emergency. Ensure they know the difference between someone needing help and calling about a minor issue like one of their toys being lost. Teach them the emergency numbers and have them posted in a visible location. Ask them frequently to recite the emergency number of 911 so it’s second nature to dial, even when they are scared and panicked.

2. Review the emergency exit plan with your children frequently. In case of a fire, ensure that they know how to get out of the house and where they should meet once they’re outside. Practice this monthly because for many, doing is better than telling as they learn and know it better by doing the action.

3. Teach your children about when to feel uncomfortable in certain situations. Ensure that they know to stay away from strangers. However, do it in a way that they aren’t scared of every person they meet. Teach your child what a stranger is and avoid teaching them that all strangers are dangerous, since this is not the case.

Teach your children about what a dangerous situation will look like. Teach them that if someone they do not know tries to take them somewhere, they should run away screaming, “Someone’s trying to take me!” or something along those lines, to let others know they need help.

Also teach them that if someone is chasing them, they should run into a safe place. A safe place is any place that has multiple people inside – like a grocery store or a library, for example.

Another situation may be when someone is trying to physically harm your child. Some parents don’t believe in this, but teaching your child some self-defense skills may be something to think about. Teach them to poke a harmful guy in the eyes or kick them in the knee.

5. Teach them what a stranger is. Giving them a private family code word that will be used if they are ever picked up by someone they are unfamiliar with can be helpful. They should never get in an unfamiliar vehicle, even if it seems innocent enough. If someone tries to get them to go in a vehicle, then they should leave and find a trusted adult right away.

6. Always have a recent picture of your child with you. If they were to ever go missing, show the picture to the police so they can help you find them. Keep the info about your child up to date. Know their height, weight, eye color, and any birthmarks they may have. This will also help the police to find your child.

The safety of our children is so important. It’s important that we teach them how to be safe, especially in situations where we aren’t there. Remember though not to scare your children about certain situations.

You don’t want them to be scared of every person they see, but you do want them to be aware of the people and their surroundings. When your child is safety conscious, you help to decrease the risk of anything happening to them.

Safety Tips for the DIY Enthusiast

When you work on a project, do you get so involved in what you’re doing that you tune out the world? Sometimes when working on something we get so absorbed in it that we push aside being safe. This is obviously very dangerous. Below are some safety tips you should keep in mind when working on any DIY project.

1. Have a clean and organized work area. Injuries can occur if your work area is cluttered. Suppose you wanted to cut a piece of wood but you saw that your work area was cluttered. You decide that you can cut the piece of wood without having to clean up and your hand slips and/or the wood falls. You could then accidently slice your hand open and have to head to the hospital for stitches.

Having a clean and organized place to work helps to prevent injuries from occurring. Ensure that the next time you’re working on a project, you set aside time to clean and organize your work area.

2. Use the proper tools for the project. You can’t complete your task safely without the right tools for doing it. If you were trying to cut a piece of wood with a kitchen knife instead of a saw, then you’ll probably find that it isn’t going to work out so well for you. The kitchen knife wouldn’t cut the wood, at least not very well, but you could also cut your hand or hurt yourself in another way.

Using the wrong tool for the project will ensure that you damage the project, the tool, or yourself.

3. Electricity and water doesn’t end well. Make sure that when plugging in any power tools or anything that requires electricity, that there isn’t water near. When working on projects, many people have gotten electrocuted because they weren’t aware of what was around them.

4. Properly store your tools. Suppose that you just throw all of your supplies into a drawer. You begin looking in that drawer for a pen but you cut your hand on some scissors. Had you placed the scissors in a place where the blade was concealed you wouldn’t have injured yourself.

Store your supplies in the proper place to ensure the safety of your supplies and of yourself.

5. Use the proper protection. If you’re working on a big project whether building a tree house or painting a house, ensure that you’re being properly protected. If working with loud tools, wear some sort of ear protection to protect your hearing. If you’re cutting something like wood or metal, be sure to protect your eyes.

Without the proper protection, you could be heading to the hospital with a very serious injury. Even if you’ve been fine in the past, you could be doing damage to yourself that you won’t see for a long time to come, like damaging your hearing by not wearing ear protection.

It’s very common for people to get so involved in what they’re doing that they push aside safety. But safety is the last thing you want to ignore. Without it, horrific accidents can happen. Be responsible and ensure that you don’t forget about being safe when working on projects. Safety first!

That Happen Around Your Home

By HILARY JOHNSON

Most Common Home Accidents

Accidents happen every day in people’s lives, whether at home or out in public. While accidents can occur anywhere and to anyone, some of the most common and even the most dangerous ones occur at home. Below is a list of some of the most common accidents that take place in the home.

1. Falling Objects – If you have children then you know that once they start moving around on their own, they begin touching everything in the house. They can potentially knock stuff over, leading to broken objects or a bump on the head. To prevent this from happening, make sure electrical cords, table cloths, and any dishes are out of reach.

2. Trips and Falls – Obviously anyone can fall, but falls usually occur in young children and the elderly. You can help prevent trips and falls by making sure things get picked up off the floor, that cords are not running along the floor, and by making sure carpets are tacked down.

Look for any tripping hazard and deal with it right away. Often times if a young child falls, you can soothe them with kind words and hugs and kisses. However, if you notice that after a person falls they become drowsy, vomits, or loses consciousness, get medical attention right away. There could be something seriously wrong and it’s best to get them checked out by a doctor.

3. Dangerous Furniture – Be careful with furniture that has sharp corners, like a coffee table. You can get covers to make the corners not so sharp. Also, be careful with glass top tables, especially if you have small children. Take stock of the furniture around your home to see that it’s safe. Anchoring large, heavy furniture to the wall will help prevent you from getting pinned under these objects, especially small children.

When hanging a TV on the wall, make sure it’s well secured and wires are tucked away.

4. Sharp Objects – Beware of these, not just when you have children around. When you wash knives you want to make sure you put them away properly, so that when you reach for something you don’t accidentally cut yourself.

5. Getting Burnt – Hot drinks and foods are the most common thing to cause burns and scalds to children under the age of five. Of course children should be kept away from the oven, open flames, and irons (anything hot).

Also, make sure the temperature on your water heater is not set too high, to help prevent scalding burns in the bathtub. You should not have it set any hotter than 120 degrees F (49 degrees C).

The most common ways that adults get burnt is when cooking and straightening hair. All burn wounds should be held under cold running water for a couple minutes. The best way to cover a burn to prevent infection is by covering with plastic and taping down.

6. Poisoning – Most poisoning incidents involve medications and household products. It’s important that these things are kept out of reach of children and anyone you feel may want to use it to intentionally cause harm to him- or herself.

When it comes to the health and happiness of our home and loved ones, we want to take all precautions possible to prevent injuries. If an accident does occur, though, it’s vital to know what to do.

Keeping Your Bathroom Safe

Prevent Accidents From Happening In The Bathroom

By HILARY JOHNSON

Keeping Your Bathroom Safe

Many accident occur in the bathroom every year. It’s been proven that bathroom accidents are the most common accidents of any room in the home. Listed below are ways that you can help prevent accidents, whether serious or minor, from happening in your bathroom.

1. Clean up any wet spots on the floor as soon as they occur. If you are remodeling the bathroom, look into getting floors that don’t get slippery when wet. These floors will help to prevent injuries from occurring due to falls. If this option isn’t available to you, place a bath mat in front of the shower. This will help prevent the floor from getting wet just by turning on the shower. Also, slip resistant mats will come in handy.

2. Minimize the moisture build-up by opening a window while taking a shower. Mold can form in your bathroom when moisture is locked in. Some molds are dangerous so it’s vital to ensure that you prevent possible growth. Ideally, having an exhaust fan in your bathroom and running it at all times while taking a shower will help keep moisture and therefore mold at bay.

3. Prevent slips in the bathtub by placing a non-slip mat on the floor of the bathtub. It can get slippery in there while washing yourself, making it very easy to fall.

Bathroom types of falls are very dangerous as the possibility of hitting your head on something hard is increased.

4. Make sure that all electrical outlets are away from a water source. Water and electricity does not mix well and when they come in contact, an electrical fire could start. If rewiring and moving outlets away from your sink is not a possibility, then make sure you have a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet installed to help prevent electrical shocks.

5. Keep all appliances and electronics away from water. Just like the outlets, you need to keep all forms of electricity away from all water. If not, electrical fires could start and cause a lot of damage to your belongings and to yourself.

6. Keep light fixtures away from the possibility of water splatter. Drops of water coming in contact with a hot light bulb can cause the glass to shatter, leaving shards of glass everywhere. In addition, the shattering of the light bulb exposes you to the electrical components.

7. Replace, remodel, and protect the sharp corners and edges of the furniture in your bathroom. If a fall were to occur in the bathroom, those sharp corners and edges can be fatal if you hit it on the right spot.

8. Place child locks on any and all cabinets that may contain any chemicals. If they get into them, it can result in a fatal tragedy.

9. Your bathroom is one of the more slippery rooms in the house. If there are elderly people living in your home, you may want to place some bars in strategic areas to help prevent slips.

Bathrooms are a place where accidents happen, just like any other area in the home. However, in the bathroom you have to be a little more conscious and aware of your surroundings. Follow these tips to stay safe.

Prevent Accidents From Happening In Your Kitchen

By HILARY JOHNSON

Keeping the Kitchen Safe

It’s important that we all practice good safety everywhere, but especially in the kitchen. Awful accidents have happened in kitchens, and it’s essential that we prevent them from happening to ourselves. Below is a list of tips to follow to ensure you’re being as safe as you can be in the kitchen.

1. Make sure that there aren’t any frayed wires, cords, and plugs on your appliances. Frayed wires can cause fires and destroy everything you own. Regularly checking the cords and plugs on your kitchen appliances, and replacing them when needed, could save you from having a lot of heartache.

2. Don’t use extension cords. Instead, use a junction box. Using one will provide you with more space when cooking, helping to prevent burns, spills, or things breaking. It also prevents overloading of the circuit.

3. Put a childproof lock on any cabinets that contain medicines and/or cleaning supplies. If you have little ones, they’ll get curious about what’s inside and could get poisoned. By locking up the cabinets, you’re keeping young children safe.

4. Don’t leave the kitchen with pots and pans boiling on the stove. If you do, it can cause a fire and damage to your kitchen and home. If you must leave the room while cooking, then turn off the stove-top.

Keep your dish towels, oven mitts, and anything else like that away from the stove. They could catch fire and cause damage.

6. Keep a fire extinguisher by or near your kitchen. In case a fire were to ever start, it’s good to have a fighting chance against it and protect your home and your loved ones.

7. Scalding is one of the most common injuries that take place in kitchen. Ensure that when handling hot pots and pans you use an oven mitt. To help prevent an injury to your child, ensure that the pan’s handle is not hanging off of the stove. If your little one can reach it, move it. And if burner knobs are not on the back of your stove, then make sure you use knob covers to prevent a small child from turning the burner on.

8. Know how to handle knives. If you are not sure what to do, here are some tips for you to remember:

* When cutting, cut away from your body. If the knife were to slip, you’d be in a lot of pain with a large chance of suffering major blood loss.

* Always use a cutting board to protect your counter tops.

* Keep the blades sharp. This will make it easier to cut through the foods.

* Keep your knives clean. Any slippery handles could cause injuries while cutting.

* Don’t attempt to catch a knife if it falls. In the process of catching it, you could cut your hand open.

* Wash and dry keeping the blade pointed away from you.

9. If anything has spilt onto your floors, clean it up immediately. If you don’t, someone may fall and hurt themselves.

10. Use a step stool when trying to reach things that are high up. Any other method you may use to reach the objects on the top shelf can lead to things breaking or you getting hurt.

Being safe in the kitchen is one of the most important things to keep in mind at home. Follow these tips to help prevent injuries from happening.

Poisoning From Happening

By HILARY JOHNSON

How to Prevent Poisoning from Happening in the Home

Poisoning in the home is, unfortunately, a very common thing to occur. Out of the over two million calls a year Poison Control receives, over 80% of the calls are related to children. It’s important that we keep our homes safe for our children. Listed below are some tips to preventing poisoning within your home.

1. Store all medicines and chemicals in a cabinet your children cannot get into. To ensure they can’t get into the harmful chemicals and medicines, place a child lock on the cabinet.

2. Store potential poisons in their original containers. Do not place the poisons in a milk jug or juice bottle. If your child gets hold of it, they will associate the container with something good and be encouraged to ingest the contents.

3. Never mix products. This could create harmful fumes when inhaled.

4. Make sure that your medicines are in childproof bottles. If the child does happen to get hold of the medicine, at least they won’t be able to open the bottle and potentially poison themselves.

5. Keep indoor plants out of reach of your little ones. Some indoor plants may be poisonous when touched or ingested, and a child or a pet are likely going to put these sorts of things in their mouth.

6. Stay away from areas that have been recently sprayed with pesticides or fertilizer.

Never refer to medicine as candy. Your child will believe you and think that it’s okay for them to eat it without you administering it to them.

8. Check the label of the medicine being administered to see the proper dosage each time.

9. Safely dispose of all medicines. If you just toss unused or expired medication in the garbage, there is a possibility that a small child will get into the garbage and ingest any harmful medication that is left. Dispose of medication by flushing it down the toilet or taking the garbage right outside as soon as you place the medicine in there.

10. Have your home and your child tested for lead regularly, especially if you live in an older home.

11. Keep the Poison Control number nearby in case a poisoning has occurred.

12. Ensure that your child cannot use a chair or step stool to reach the hard-to-reach medicines and chemicals. Even if you think they can’t, they probably can, so keep a lock on that cabinet anyways.

Signs of Poisoning

Be sure to be on the lookout for signs of a poisoning. People whom have just been poisoned usually display these symptoms:

* Difficulty breathing
* Nausea
* Dizziness
* Cramps
* Difficulty speaking
* Foaming or burning of the mouth

If you believe someone has been poisoned, call the Poison Control immediately. When you call, ensure that you have the following information on hand:

* Victim’s condition, age, and weight
* When the product was consumed
* What they consumed
* How much was taken in
* Your name and phone number

You used to be advised to induce vomiting if you know a child has been poisoned, but now The American Academy of Pediatrics advises against it. You could potentially do more harm to them than good.

By HILARY JOHNSON

Home Safety Tips

It’s important to us all that our home be considered safe. Accidents happen all the time within the home, though. Listed below are several tips to follow to ensure safety in each room in your home.

In the Kitchen

* Keep flammable objects away from the stove. Do not let oven mitts, paper towels, etc. come into contact with the hot pots and pans or the burners.

* Use cleaning products with caution. Ensure that you do not put the cleaning products within reach of your children. Keep them out of reach so they cannot accidently poison themselves.

* Never leave sharp objects and tools unattended in a place where little hands can reach them.

* Ensure that all electrical cords are kept away from water and flammable objects like curtains and hand towels. The cords could overheat and catch fire.

* Ensure that your appliances are getting the proper ventilation. You can do this by keeping them away from other objects and regularly vacuuming out the back of your appliances.

In the Bathroom

* Just like in the kitchen, ensure that all cords are kept away from water. Water and electricity does not mix and can cause an electrical fire.

* Use non-slip floor mats. The shower floor can be slippery when wet. By using a non-slip floor mat you are protecting yourself from slip and fall accidents.

Like in the kitchen, keep cleaning supplies locked up and out of reach of small children to prevent accidental poisoning.

In the Bedroom

* Never smoke in your bedroom, or anywhere in your home. Flammable objects could catch fire from your cigarette and destroy your home and belongings.

* Purchase a mattress that is flame resistant. If a fire breaks out in your bedroom, then you want to be protected and allow yourself the time you need to figure out your escape route and get out of your home.

* You’re most vulnerable when you sleep. To ensure your safety in case someone were to come into your home, keep a phone and light by your bed.

In Your Yard

* To ensure the safety of your pets and kids, surround your yard with a fence.

* If you have a pool, make sure that it’s covered and fenced in. This will protect your kids from any risk of falling in and drowning. Having an alarm on the fence or the door leading out to your pool will alert you of any possible security breaches by your children so you know where they are and can prevent accidents.

In Your Garage

* Keep any harmful substances you store in the garage out of the reach of your children and pets.

* Keep the space clean and organized. Ensure that there aren’t sharp objects that are out in the open and in easy reach of your children and pets.

Your home is a place to live and relax in, so you should feel safe there at all times. To ensure that you achieve the highest degree of safety within your home, follow these steps and do what you think is right for your home.

All homes and families are different, so there will be different ways of keeping each other safe. There are companies that you can hire to come in and evaluate your home to make sure you don’t have any holes in your safety armor.

In Your Home

By HILARY JOHNSON

Fire Safety in the Home

Fires unfortunately occur in homes all the time. It’s important that we know what to do if a fire breaks out in our home, but it’s also essential to know how to prevent a fire from happening in the first place. Listed below are some tips to follow to ensure the safety of you, your family, and your home.

Fire Safety Tips

* Talk to your family about an escape plan if a fire were to ever break out in your home. Know where you’d escape from and where you’d meet everyone once you’re out.

* Ensure that all of your smoke alarms work. In over 60% of house fire deaths, the families did not have working smoke alarms.

Preparing For and Preventing a House Fire

* Keep flammables away from anything that gets hot or could cause a spark.

* Never smoke in your home.

* Ensure that your children know the dangers of a fire. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of your children.

* Do not leave candles unattended.

* Make sure that you have smoke alarms on all levels of your home – better yet in every room.

* Teach your children about what a smoke alarm does and what it sounds like. Make sure that they know what to do when/if it were to ever go off.

Test your smoke alarms once a month. If they don’t work, replace the batteries.

* Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Practice waking up to smoke alarms and practice your low crawl to help prevent smoke inhalation.

* Make sure that everyone knows how to dial 911 and what to tell them. (Address, name, and what the emergency is)

* Ensure that everyone knows what to do if they were to ever catch on fire. (Stop, drop, and roll)

* Have two ways out. If door handles are warm, do not open the door. This mean that there is a fire directly on the other side. Try your other escape route.

* If smoke, heat, or flames prevent you from escaping, place a wet towel underneath your door. This will prevent the fire from spreading into your room. Dial 911 and stay by a window. Signal for help from there too.

* When escaping from your home, ensure that you’re being as quick as possible. Most times, you only have about two minutes to escape. Don’t stop for anything, items or even pets.

Cooking Safety

* Don’t leave the food you’re cooking on a stove unattended. If you do have to leave the kitchen, do not leave the food cooking; turn off the stove until you come back and finish cooking.

* Keep all flammables away from the stove. This includes oven mitts, hand towels, clothing, and plastic.

* Keep your pets off of the stove and counters. This will help prevent anything from falling onto the burners and catching fire.

Fires are very scary and cause a lot of damage. Remember to stay calm and call for help. Know how to stay safe if a fire ever happens within your home. It’s important that you know all of the safety tips so that you have the best chance of survival.

Electricity Dangers

In The Home!

By HILARY JOHNSON

Electrical Dangers in the Home

With our heavy reliance on electricity, we all need to be cautious of the electrical use in our homes. Knowing the way electricity can be a danger to you and your family and how you can keep your home safe is vital. Listed below are some of the most common electricity dangers in the home and how to stop them from happening to you.

1. Faulty Wiring – Poor wiring increases the chance of an electrical fire. This is one of the reasons why it’s best to avoid doing electrical work yourself. Get a professional electrician to do it for you. Also, have a professional electrician check your wiring on a regular basis to ensure everything is still okay. If you need to, you may want to upgrade and replace any old, faulty wires.

2. Outlets Close to Water – Electricity and water does not mix. Water conducts electricity and when coming in contact with people, it can kill them. The outlets in your bathroom and kitchen should be installed a good distance away from any water sources to prevent deaths or serious injuries.

3. Covered Electrical Cords and Wires – Covering of cords and wires can make them overheat and cause a fire. Keep your cords and wires away from other objects and ensure that they never get covered. Similarly, ensure that your computer and television have enough space and proper ventilation to ensure they do not catch fire.

Too many things plugged in could cause overheating, leading to fires

4. Light Bulbs – Many people don’t realize just how dangerous light bulbs can be. But when they are covered by curtains, jackets, plastics, etc., a fire could occur. Light bulbs like all other electricity sources could cause an electrical shock. Make sure that when unscrewing a light bulb, it’s turned off. When replacing a light bulb, ensure you’re replacing it with the right wattage. If you don’t, overheating can occur easier and faster.

5. Extension Cords – If these aren’t hidden and away from the walkway, people could trip and hurt themselves. Don’t use extension cords as a permanent substitution for a power source, and don’t ever plug in too much into the extension cord.

6. Curious Little Children – Open sockets are a huge danger to little kids. They want to stick anything and everything into the hole and can get an electric shock as a result, leading to some very serious injuries. To prevent this from happening to them, use the plastic socket covers.

7. Pouring Water on Electrical Fires – Water conducts electricity so this would only make the fire worse. Keep a fire extinguisher in your home to help extinguish the fire. If you can’t extinguish the fire yourself, turn off the electrical power source causing the fire and call for help from your local fire station.

Electricity isn’t something you should ever mess around with. Be safe and ensure that these accidents never happen in your home.

Safety Tips For Around Your Home

Bedroom Safety

A bedroom should be a safe place to be in. When arranging your child’s room, you want to be sure that there is no chance for a dangerous accident to happen. To help ensure that your child is the safest that he or she can be in their bedroom, follow these tips.

0-3 Year Old’s Room

* The safest place for a baby to sleep to help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is to sleep in a crib, on a firm mattress, and with a fitted sheet.
